Cables Can Make A Difference In Charging Speed

Did you know that besides the charger you are using, cables can also make a big difference when it comes to charging speed? You may be wondering why that is so when they all look more or less the same on the outside. However, it’s the wires on the inside that matter. In this article, we share with you how cables can make a difference in charging speed.

Serves as A Pocket

These days, many phones are compatible with fast charging and people are increasingly looking to buy chargers and cables that can do the job. Why is that so? There are a few reasons:

  • Increasing phone usage means that people need to charge their phones as often as once per day, sometimes even more.
  • Bigger phone sizes mean bigger batteries and without fast charging solutions, these phones would take ages to charge, putting buyers off.

How Does Fast Charging Work?

Many people may already have realized through their own experience that fast charging a phone is not a straightforward process. When you first plug your phone in with low battery, power increases at a relatively fast pace before reaching its peak. Once it has reached that peak, the rate of charging towards full power starts to slow down significantly. When your phone is fully charged but remains plugged in, power either trickles in slowly or the charger tops up a small amount of power each time the battery falls below 100%.

Wires within A Cable

There are four wires within every USB cable: red, white, green and black. While the white and green wires carry data, the red and black wires carry the power for charging. As a result, these two wires determine the charge speed of your cable. In a typical cable, the standard charge rate is around 0.5A with 28 gauge wires, approximately 0.32 mm. However, faster charging cables have bigger internal wires that are mostly 24 gauge, or 0.51 mm, and therefore able to carry larger currents that are 2A or more.
