Choosing A USB Cable That Lasts

In consumer devices, the standard for DC power and data transmission has become USB. But, to assure yourself a cable that suits your needs, is speedy, and a USB cable that lasts, how do you choose? There are, after all, various types from which to choose.

First of all, you have the choice of the following types:

  • Type A – The most common USB is rectangular in shape. You see it as smart phone charging cables, media players, and in DC charging cables. This USB connector will usually hook into a power supply, laptop supply, or other host device.
  • Type B – These plug into a hard drive or other peripheral device. Into micro cables, mini, or standard, this type B socket can be divided. The function is the same with all of them but they each feature, suited to their particular applications, different physical shapes.
  • Type C – Reverse plug orientation is allowed here. Without worrying about being upside down, whether in a negative or positive direction, you will plug your USB cable in correctly.

Why Is Durability Important?

High quality and durability are important aspects when choosing a USB cable. But why?

  • For a quick and safe charging experience, it's important to choose the right smart phone USB cable.
  • It can be hazardous, at worst, but definitely slow using a cheap USB cable.
  • The physical reliance of a USB cable is a major concern.

There are also several other factors that can determine the reliability, durability, etc., of USB cable. USB cable thickness, length, and the materials from which it is made matter greatly.

USB Cable Thickness

Charging speed can be affected by a USB cable's internal wires. Lower resistance is offered, the thicker the wires. This leads to faster charging performance and a greater maximum current.

Be advised, however, that, to shield against magnetic interference, these wires need to have a woven metal sleeve. Additionally, this aspect helps guard the wires against damage of a physical nature.

USB Cable Length

Directly related to the length of a data cable is a smart phone’s charge speed and data transmission. The potential charging speed and data transmission of two cables made from the same materials – when those USB cables are of differing lengths – will be as follows: The smaller the resistance, the greater the speed and transmission. That means that, the shorter your cable is, the better.

Materials from Which a USB Cable Is Made

From one manufacturer to another, varying in composition, today's USB cables can contain outer insulation, internal wires, and electrical contacts. Some of the materials used for these common aspects are as follows:

  • Nylon – These cables are very attractive in the right application. Nylon is very firm, strong, and, when used in braided USB cables, not easily damaged.
  • TPE – This plastic shows good strength and elasticity. It can be recycled so it’s also environmentally friendly.
  • PVC – This weather resistant, strong, and non-flammable material is very common. Even more durable, however, is the above-stated TPE.
